The velodrome, which remained a ghostly structure for 20 years, is about to become the second public cycling track in Greece built to international standards. The signing ceremony, attended by Mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis and the representative of the contracting company, signifies the initiation of the project titled "Strategic Redevelopment of Chania Municipality's Velodrome Area."
The €8 million project, fully funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund, is expected to be completed within 18 months. This redevelopment aims to breathe new life into the emblematic sports facility, transforming it from an abandoned building into a vibrant hub for athletes and cycling enthusiasts alike.
During the signing event at the Velodrome in Kathiana, Mayor Simandirakis expressed gratitude to all involved parties for their hard work in bringing this project to fruition. He emphasized that the revitalization would not only benefit local athletes but also attract teams from abroad, positioning the velodrome as a magnet for top cycling events at the European and global levels.
As the Municipality of Chania embarks on this ambitious project, it's important to note that the upgrade may lead to the disappearance of the existing graffiti art within the velodrome. These vibrant expressions, which have adorned the velodrome's walls for years, will make way for a new era in the facility's history.
While the redevelopment promises a brighter future for Chania's Velodrome, it also marks the end of an era for the unique graffiti art that has become an integral part of the velodrome's identity. As the construction progresses, the memories encapsulated in the graffiti will pave the way for a modern and world-class cycling facility, ready to host athletes and events on an international stage.
